Methodology for painted works that feature embroidery as well i.e. 'Why I'll Never Take Acid Again'

First i draw on the linen, then i outline the drawing with stitching, then I paint, using fabric paint, after which I continue embroidering until it is finished. 

My embroidered artworks have been a finalist in the 'Tim Olsen Drawing Prize'. I am presently making 'Acid Girl' an embroidered soft sculpture with a steel armature that sits on a revolving plinth. This is for the 'Tamworth Textile Triennial 2017' - the exhibition will tour Australian Galleries until 30/6/2020. It will open in Tamworth October 2017.

Since the 1960s a diverse body of art has been informed by feminism as many curators rejected their biased ideas about craft, despite this, feminists have always had difficulty with the value of embroidery, a craft that has been used for centuries to keep women quiet. Embroidery has always been a discipline used to inculcate feminine qualities and indicate a social setting where leisure prevailed. Whilst girls in domestic servitude or at school would employ the needle out of necessity, the idle rich would encourage their daughters to embroider for amusement and to signify an aristocratic lifestyle. The sexual division whereby women were assigned to needlework and boys to Latin prose or carpentry, was fostered by the school curricula, and still exists. However, with the rise of the feminist art movement, embroidery came into its own and became a strong political tool (for example Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party, 1979). Confessional artists Louise Bourgeois and Tracey Eminshaped their careers by making public confessions about their lives. Both have also used the craft of embroidery from time to time and, in doing so have given artists permission to do the same. My work can also be read as confessional.

Embroidery is a medium loaded with implications of gender and the domestic domain, providing a rich landscape against which to contrast subversive concepts. My embroidered and applique artworks depict unexpected images together with poignant and often humorous text. The images are meant to charm, unsettle, surprise and challenge preconceptions of traditional needlework. I draw upon psychological and emotionally significant events from my life, and my childroon as well as my adventure abroad, to inform my work.

Embroidery is a medium loaded with implications of gender and the domestic domain, providing a rich landscape against which to contrast subversive concepts and that is the crux of my practice, I subvert expectations of established needlework practice. My embroidered and applique artworks depict unexpected images together with poignant and often humorous text. The images are meant to charm, unsettle, surprise and challenge preconceptions of traditional needlework. I draw upon psychological and emotionally significant events from my childhood growing up at Maroubra Beach, my later life and my adventures abroad to inform my work.

I recently won a bursary to do a Phd. at Deakin University, Melbourne beginning 2018. I a represented by M Contemporary Gallery,

I'm an emerging artist represented by M Contemporary Gallery, Woollahra, Sydney. I graduated from UNSW COFA in 2014 with BFA (Honours first class). After winning an ArtStart grant I spent 2015 in Europe and China staying in artists residencies. My work has been exhibited within Australia, Europe and China.
