ARTIST BIO

For me, painting is about expressing the essence of memory, moments and places in a way that speaks to people, and evokes our shared experience.

I am an Australian artist, based in Ballarat, Victoria.  After completing my education in the arts and humanities to doctoral level, and working as a university lecturer in the UK, I immigrated to Australia in 1999.

I paint in both oils and acrylics. My work has sold well in key shows and established Melbourne and Victorian galleries over the last decade. My painting has been featured on the ABC and on Channel 9. You can view my website for further information regarding my paintings and gallery representation at www.stellaclarke.com.au.

My popular 'Art of Nostalgia' series is about personal and social memories, with evocative themes particularly regarding childhood and female experience.

My landscape, or 'moodscape' works seek to transport the viewer elsewhere, and are painted in a poetic and expressive style.

I do not often enter my work for awards, unless this is as part of a show, since my nostalgic works in particular do not align with traditional landscape/portrait or experimental categories.  I love to see them adopted by happy buyers.

My largest works are usually sold through galleries, but  I make some smaller works and studies available to interested buyers and collectors through Gallery 247 and connected shows.

The works are unframed and ready to hang, though they generally look beautiful framed according to buyers' tastes. Small paintings work very well individually, or in a 'salon' or 'French' hang, where a variety of small pieces are arranged together. I hope you enjoy looking at these works, and will consider owning one in future.
